Meeting Camera Extraordinaire Eric Hoyton - 31st October
Today I met with Eric Hoyton to talk about his career as a cameraman in the media industry.
Eric has worked on many different programs, to name a few:
Journey To The Centre Of The Earth, Genocide, Dr Who Confidential 2, Grand Designs, Naked Science, Eating With The Enemy and Nature of Britain.
He has also worked on many advertisements with his most recent being the 'Lurpak commercial.'
He also gave me a crash course on the Sony HDV Z1 (high ‘def’) cameras which was a bit of a tease as we cannot use them until next term…Bad times.
Talking to Eric I found out that he most enjoys the work when he is doing something challenging and new. He particularly likes travelling abroad (to hot countries)…good times.
He also shared a story about his work in Africa. On the series Future Reptiles, he described wading through large expanses of water and mud to shoot some crocodile eggs. He also added that lurking within this large expanse of water that frequently reached neck height, were a considerable number of hungry crocodiles protecting their young.
Initially I thought the work of a camera man could be slightly mundane and a bit soul destroying but after listening to him relate all the exciting projects that he has worked on, my eyes were really opened to the world of the camera man.
